1. The Palmer Lake Star was built in 1935 as a show of courage, determination and optimism during height of the Great Depression.

2. Original star builders include: B.E. Jack, Bert Sloan, Byron Medlock, Gilbert Wolf, Floyd Bellinger, George Sill and Jess Krueger. Many townsfolk helped, these listed were the primary leaders.

3. Sundance Mountain hosts the star, it has a 58% slope. The star has 92 light bulbs. Arthur & Reba Bradley allow use of their land for the star.

4. “Help the star survive” projects: 1976: the town’s bicentennial project led by Harry Krueger & Carl Duffner. In 2002: Todd Bell lead a team upgrading electrical system and adding a wireless “turn on.”

5. The Palmer Lake Star was selected by History Colorado to be listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in January 24, 2013. Tim Wagner’s 2009 survey of the star determined it’s exact size, Tim’s efforts and information was key to the star’s nomination and selection.

6. Bert Sloan’s dog Dizzy, a German Shepherd, helped haul supplies up and down Sundance and is honored with a statue in the Village Green.

7. The Palmer Lake Fire Department is the star’s custodian and spearheads the annual Chili Supper & Star Lighting event. Town firefighters are the “Keepers of the Star on Sundance.”

8. The star shines every night during the “Christmas/Hanukah/ Season” from Saturday after Thanksgiving thru December to proclaim the spirit of goodwill.

9. In 2014, the Palmer Lake Elementary School’s Green Panther Club raised funds for replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs.
